EPWORTH, Iowa - Donald J. Koopmann, 84, of Cascade, formerly of Epworth, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid, where military rites will be accorded by the Epworth John White American Legion Post 650 and the Centralia Amvets Post 3. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral, Epworth, where there will be a prayer service at 5 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born March 20, 1926, in Dyersville, son of Emil and Mary (Bergfeld) Koopmann. He received his education in the Placid area schools.

Don was a Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. He saw frontline action as a sergeant in the 45th Infantry, 2nd Battalion, of Company E.

He married Margaret F. Hosch on Nov. 8, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade; she preceded him in death on May 16, 2010.

Don's greatest pride was farming in the Placid area until retiring in 2000.

He was a member of St. John's Parish in Placid and its Altar and Rosary Society, the Epworth John White American Legion Post 650, the Centralia AmVets Post 3, the Peosta Knights of Columbus-Council 5513, the Epworth Gun Club and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. He also served as township trustee for Taylor Township in Dubuque County.

Don was a great husband, father and friend. He enjoyed rides in the country, looking at the crops and visiting with anyone and everyone. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards. He especially loved his grandchildren and spending time with his family.

Surviving are seven daughters, Marilyn (John) Taft, Phyllis (Phil) Mausser, Nancy (Tom) Kramer, Cindy (Randy) McDermott, LuAnn (Tim) Cox and Linda (Pat) Besler, all of Epworth, and Sheila (John) Beringer, of Cascade; seven sons, Chris (Sherry) Koopmann, of Epworth, Roger Koopmann, of Dyersville, Mike (Kim) Koopmann, of Epworth, Leonard (Jody) Koopmann, of Dubuque, Dean (Jennifer) Koopmann, of Anamosa, Tim (Shelley) Koopmann, of Marion, and Donnie (Reyne) Koopmann Jr., of Epworth; 43 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two siblings, Jeanie (Francis) Oberfoell, of Epworth, and Grace (Donald) Droeszler, of Bernard; and a sister-in-law, Rosie Koopmann, of Delhi.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Bernice Kramer, Melita Ross and Inez Silker; and two brothers, John and Elmer Koopmann.

A Donald J. Koopmann Memorial Fund has been established.
