Ensign Michael T. Martin
Funeral services for Navy Ensign Michael Thomas Martin, 23, of 1901 Orchard, who was fatally injured in a car accident about 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lunning chapel.
Dr. Robert Gildner will officiate, with military rites to be held at Aspen Grove cemetery.
Ensign Martin was born in Burlington Oct. 18, 1952, the son of Thomas R. and Janet Dietrick Martin.
He was a graduate of Burlington high school, and received a degree in marine biology from Iowa State University, Ames, in 1974, after which he was commissioned through the Navy’s ROTC program. He was a member of First United Methodist church and the Order of the Sexton.
A qualified deep sea diver, Martin served as operations officer aboard the USS Opportune, a Navy salvage vessel which recently spent seven months clearing the Suez canal in the Middle East. Martin was home-ported in Little Creek, Va.
Surviving: His parents; three sisters, Stephanie, with the Navy in Hawaii, and Sydney and Shelley, both at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Murrill Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Dietrick, all of Burlington.
A memorial has been established for a scholarship to Southeastern Community college.
