Elgin Echo, Thursday, 14 August 1902.

An exchange tells us of the death of Frank Thomas, of Hopkinton, who died last week as the result of an injury received by falling upon the handle of a pitchfork which entered his body to a depth of sixteen inches. Young Thomas was working for C. Spence and was engaged in harvesting hay. He was upon a load which had just been completed. He dropped his fork at the rear of the wagon, tines down, where it stuck upright in the ground, and in the act of reaching over to adjust something about the hay loader he lost his balance and fell. He came down with full force upon the upright handle of the fork, which was driven into his body. The handle entered at the anal orifice and followed the intestine apparently to the location of the stomach and liver, the measurement of the handle evidencing that it had intruded full sixteen inches.
