PVT Donald Reed WHITNEY
1923-1944

Dundee, IA – PVT Donald Reed WHITNEY, only son of Mr, & Mrs. J. C. WHITNEY of Dundee, (Delaware County, IA) was killed in action in (Southern) France Sept. 20 (1944) according to a telegram received by his parents from the War Department.

Private WHITNEY saw action at the invasion of Southern France and was at the Anzio Beachhead (Italy). He saw the Pope, St. Peters Cathedral and Vatican City according to a letter mailed to his parents Sept. 27.

He was a graduate in 1941 from Lamont, IA High School and entered military service in 1943.

In June 1948 his parents returned his body from France for reburial in Lamont, IA Campton Cemetery.
