Mercedes Logan

Mercedes Logan, 86, of Independence, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, with the Rev. Al Vorwald as celebrant.

The White Funeral Home of Independence handled arrangements.

Mercedes (Crowley) Logan was born June 15, 1912, in Delaware County, the daughter of James and Genevieve (Kinley) Crowley.

She graduated from Coggon High School in 1929. She received her teaching certification from the Iowa Normal School in Cedar Falls and taught country school before her marriage.

On Nov. 27, 1930, she was united in marriage with John Raymond Logan at the Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo. They farmed in Delaware, Buchanan and Fayette counties before moving to Independence in 1965.

They then ran the Rush Park Cafe in Independence until they retired in 1975.

Mercedes was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Independence and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was the founder of the Banks Be Natural 4-H club in Fayette County and was a past president of the Rosary Society at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Logan of Van Home and John Logan of Independence; one daughter, Joann (Mrs. Raymond) Pritchard of Decorah; 14 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Doris Hoit of Mason City.

Mercedes Logan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, who died in 1995; and brother, Marcus Crowley.
