Mrs. Ermina Dunlap
Ermina Ellen Dunlap, eldest daughter of the late James and Nancy Phillips, was born October 29, 1856, near Delhi, Iowa. She died January 24, 1940, at her home in Hopkinton after two days' illness with pneumonia.
Mrs. Dunlap received her education in the public schools of Delhi, Lenox college and the old-time institutes for teachers. She began to teach at the age of sixteen and taught in Delaware county for nine years.
On November 24, 1881, she was married to Thomas B. Dunlap of the Golden Prairie community. To this union were born four children; Herman J. of Hopkinton, Iowa; Vivian O. of Duluth, Minnesota; Mrs. Jessie McGuire, 404 Lincoln Way, Valparaiso, Indiania; and Ray H., Masonville, Iowa. These with two step-children, Mrs. Myra Gillespie, 514 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown, N.Y. and A.E. Dunlap, Manchester, Iowa survive her.
Mr. Dunlap died March 23, 1914. Two step-children, Robert J. and Mrs. Elizabeth McKean, and two sister, Mrs. Jennie Danford and Mrs. Lillies Moline, preceded her in death. Two sisters survive her; Mrs. Nellie Hart, 1752 N. Sierra Bonita, Pasadena, California, and Mrs. Esther Logan, 3044 Locust St., Riverside, California.
In 1905, the family moved from the farm in the Golden community to Hopkinton where Mrs. Dunlap has lived an active, useful life. For over fifty years she has been a member of the Congregational church of Golden and during her years in Hopkinton she has been a ready helper in the work of the Presbyterian church.
She leaves an example of industry, efficiency, courage in facing the problems of life, fortitude through years of almost constant suffering and an abiding Christian faith.
A short service was held at the Matthias funeral parlor early Sabbath afternoon. Rev. David de Best of the Hopkinton Presbyterian church read passages of Scripture and led in prayer, and Mrs. W.J. Kirkwood, accompanied by Mrs. Kelsey Reid sang, "Abide With Me". later in the afternoon services were held in the Congregatian church at Golden with Rev. E. F. McClain. Mrs. Kirkwood sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and Rev. and Mrs. E. F. McClain accompanied by Mrs. Henry Saathoff sang " Under His Wings".
The pallbearers were Messrs. Earl Dunlap, J. J. Dunlap, Alan LeClere, George Chrystal, James Duggan and Charles Thing.
Burial was in the cemetery at Golden.
