John Thomsen, 52, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Monday, July 20, 2009, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. John was born on June 1, 1957, in Manchester, the son of Carsten and Adeline (Goedken) Thomsen. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from West Delaware Community School in 1975 and attending two years in Kirkwood Community College in the Industrial Maintenance Program.

John was united in marriage to Karen Kelchen on September 25, 1976, in Manchester. He worked at manufacturing jobs in Cedar Rapids area until 1983 when they moved to the family farm near Manchester. In 2005 they established the Thomsen Lawn Mowing Service.

John loved spending time with his grandkids. He was a wonderful cook and had a totally unique laughter that will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Thomsen of Manchester; one daughter, Christina and Anthony Hynick of Monticello; two sons, David and special friend Felicia Harbaugh of Manchester and Daniel Thomsen of Manchester; three grandchildren, Emma, Connor, and Aaron Hynick; one sister, Marge (Mike) Daley of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Bill (Donna) Thomsen of Manchester; his father and mother-in-law, Harold and Pearl Kelchen of Ryan; one brother-in-law, Jim (Janet) Kelchen of Edgewood; five sisters-in-law, Darla Kelchen (Del Timmermann) of Greeley, Jane (John) Friedley of Volga, Linda (Mike) Martin of Hawaii, Donna Brodsack of Swisher, and Margie (Tom) Oleson of Ryan; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, JoAnn Daley; and a brother-in-law, Tom Kelchen.

Visitation: 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. July 22, 2009 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory - Manchester, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. July 23, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church - Ryan, Iowa. Friends may call one hour before service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: July 23, 2009 at Calvary Cemetery - Ryan, Iowa
