Fredrich William Schantz was born Nov. 29, 1876, in Marieta, Ohio. He was the son of Jacob W. and Amelia Schramn Schantz and was one of a family of 10 boys and 3 girls.

When a young man, Fred came to Iowa to visit some of his older brothers who had settled on farms near Alburnett. Later he returned to make his home in Marion, Iowa, and became an employee of the Milwaukee Railroad.

In 1909 he married Cora McLaughlin and they went to Cedar Rapids where they continued to live until Cora's death in 1933. In July of 1947 he was married to Daisylea Rardin and they lived in Cedar Rapids until 1951 when they came to make their home in southern Iowa.

In December of 1963, Fred suffered a second stroke and after hospitalization, he entered the Tripp nursing home in Leon. He later became a resident of Westview Acres, for 2 1/2 years where his health had improved until a heart condition developed. He departed this life at about 10 o'clock on the night of June 15 at the Decatur County hospital at the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 16 days.

Those surviving include his invalid wife, Daislea; a sister-in-law, Mrs. George Schantz and daughter, Mrs. Helen Tice of Lima, Ohio, a brother-in-law, Paul Rardin and sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Rauch and her husband Earl, all of Lamoni.

Also surviving are six nephews and their families: Carlton Schantz of Troy Mills, Iowa; Paul R. Rardin and Marion Rardin of Layton, Utah; Rardin Rauch of Lamoni. Caroll Schantz and Clyde Schantz of Mrs. Ethel Schantz, wife and a deceased nephew, Frank, and their son Lewis and family also mourn his passing.

At the age of 12, Fred was baptized and confirmed a member of the Lutheran church. His life was guided by the teachings of his faith. Fred had a tremendous capacity for kindness and love for his immediate family and his neighbors and friends.

Twenty years ago he was honored as a 50-year member of Mount Herman Masonic Lodge No. 263 AF and AM of Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of the Eagle's Fraternal organization.

Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Gary Bird at the Slade Funeral Home at Leon, Iowa, on Tuesday, June 18, 1968, at 9:30 a.m., with final resting place in the Masonic Circle of Cedar Park Memorial cemetery at Cedar Rapids with last rites conducted by the Masonic Order.
