Alice Hortense Hyde was born at Woodbine, Iowa, January 21, 1917, the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hyde. With her in the family have been four other children: Paul, four years her senior, who preceded her at the age of ten years; and three sisters who survive her, Mabel, Betty Ann, and Janice.

The family has resided in towns in western and southern Iowa and in northern Missouri. In these places Hortense received her elementary and secondary education.

In May, 1933, the family came to Lamoni for the educational and religious opportunities offered by the community. Here she became a participant in the activities of the school, civic, and church life that promote the higher standards of the community. Upon enrolling in Graceland College last fall she continued this sharing in the finer side of college life.

On August 29, 1925, Hortense was baptized into the Reorganized Latter Day Saint church at Woodbine, Iowa. In that faith, fellowship and idealism, she grew to young womanhood. To its service, she pledged her life and her talents.

Hortense was a girl of much promise, having completed a year of college work at Graceland and two years training in voice. She was a member of the A Cappella Chorus and was looked upon by her music teachers as one having outstanding ability.

She had made plans to enter Graceland again this fall to continue her education. Her passing is an immeasurable loss to her family and leaves a void that cannot be easily filled among the personnel of the college and Lamoni youth.

Funeral services were held from Lamoni Coliseum, Sunday, September 8, with Blair Jensen in charge. The sermon was delivered by Roy A. Cheville. Interment at Rose Hill Cemetery.
