John McCartney, an old soldier and pioneer citizen of Decatur county, died at his home in Davis City last Friday, and the funeral was held on Sunday from the home, under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post, interment being in the Davis City cemetery. "Uncle John," as he was familiarly known, was an honest, upright man, and one who was respected by all. He was about 70 years of age, and is survived by his aged companion, who is very sick and not expected to live, and five children. He was a native of Scotland and was brought to America when he was about a year old. settling in Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. He came west and settled at Red Oak, Iowa, where he was married to Miss Annie Epperson, and to their union were born seven children, two having with their mother preceded him to the Great Beyond. His death is mourned by a large circle of warm friends, and the community has lost one of its most upright and exemplary citizens.
