Don Simpson

Indianola - Don Leslie Simpson, 78, of Ankeny, Iowa, died Thursday, September 13, 2018 at his home. Don was born on July 18, 1940, in Leon, Iowa, to Guy and Florence (Davis) Simpson.

Don graduated from Leon High School in 1959 and married Carolyn Hill at New Salem Baptist Church on June 21st. December 1960 he graduated from Barber College and January 1961 he joined the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne. It only took a few moments after meeting Don to realize his love for the Lord and his pride in his family and military service.

Don had a longtime barber shop in Leon (Don's Barber Shop) which he later established in Slater, Huxley, Des Moines, and Indianola, Iowa. He had a variety of other businesses throughout his life and he and Carolyn thoroughly enjoyed their acreage near Indianola.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn; daughters, Linda Young of Story City, Brenda Simpson of Indianola, Debbie Farahbakhsh of Altoona and Diana Simpson of Des Moines; brother, Jimmie (Jane) Simpson of Princeton, MO.; sister, Carol Baughman of Alaska; 7 grandchildren, Robert, Michael (Natalie), Maryam, Amir, Mina (Mirzad), Rachel and Marjan; and 4 great grandchildren, Makayla, Samuel, Melina and Lionel. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Florence Simpson; and a brother, Rex Simpson.

At Don's request, there will not be a traditional funeral service, but a Celebration of Life for Don will be held on Oct. 6 at 12:00 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church, Leon, Iowa; beginning with a military escort and ceremony. At a later date, his ashes will be added to a memorial wall at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa.
