Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 591:

"J. A. DENHAM, attorney and farmer, resides on section 8, Richland Township. He was born in Indiana in 1828, son of John and Nancy (Davis) Denham, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of North Carolina. Mr. Denham was reared on a farm, and came to Decatur County and entered land in 1853. He settled in Clarke County, where he remained until 1865, then settled in Decatur County. He was married in Logan County, Illinois, in 1854, to Angeline Bushnell, born in Wayne County, New York, in 1830. Their children are -- Ida, Rosalie, Minnie, Ruth D., Jennie B. and John A. Mr. Denham enlisted in the late war, in 1861, in Company K, Second Nebraska Cavalry, and served one year. He was in the battle of White Stone Hill, and several others of less note. He has been admitted to the bar, and is a lawyer of more than ordinary ability. He has held the office of justice of the peace two years. He is a member of Lodge 464, I.O.O.F., Grand River, and also of the Grand Army of the Republic. He owns 140 acres of excellent land. Postoffice, Westerville."
