Joseph (Uncle Joe) Crees

Reflections of Grand River, Iowa 1881-1981, "Early Pioneers" p. 20

Joseph (Uncle Joe) Crees (born 1856) was the son of John and Catherine. He was born on the old Crees place where the little brick house was. At the age of three the family moved to the next farm west where he spent the remainder of his life. He could remember carrying wooden pins to the men when they built the big red barn. This barn is still standing today on the John Van Laar Farm, and is in good repair. It is 122 years old (1981). After her death he married Caroline (Aunt Carrie) Dobson. They took Claud Wilkie in to their home to raise. He was nine years old and had been in Iowa Childrens Home. A niece, Beulah McConnell (married Clyde Glazebrook) came to live with them at about age 12. Several years later Frankie Wilkie (Claud's son) came to live with them. He was about 10 years old. He died in 1935 at the age of 21.
