SAMUEL CARLTON

SAMUEL CARLTON, farmer and stock-raiser, resides on section 5, Richland
Township, where he owns 245 acres of land, in a high state of
cultivation. He was born in Fayette County, Indiana, in l84l. His
parents, James and Margaret Carlton, were natives of Ireland, and came
to America in l832, settling in Fayette County. Mr. Carlton came to
Decatur County in l859, and settled upon his present farm. He was
married in Clarke County, Iowa, in l867, to Eliza Tillotson, born in
Vigo County, Indiana, in l848. Their children are -- Emma O., Maggie
M., Nellie T. and George N. Sarah is deceased. Mr. Carlton has held
the office of assessor, school director and postmaster. In l863 he
enlisted in Company H, Ninth Iowa Cavalry, as a private, and was
promoted to Second Duty Sergeant for meritorious conduct in line of
duty, and served nearly three years. He was in the battle at
Brownsville, Clarinton, Searcy and Prairie, Arkansas, and served in
others of less importance. Politically he is a Republican. Himself and
wife are members of the United Brethren Church. Mr. Carlton is one of
the prominent and influential men of the county, and socially, a
gentleman. His post office address is Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa.
