The Harvey and Druzilla Brammer Family

Harvey (1853-1930), husband of Druzilla (McConnell) Brammer (both born in Indiana), were the parents of 9 children.

John Wesley, (b. in Decatur Co., Ia., on April 26, 1875) died on March 23, 1936, in Grand River, Ia. On Jan. 26, 1898, he was married to Dora Hukill of Jamison, Mo. Dora was born April 18, 1878, and died Nov. 12, 1942. Both are buried in young Cemetery. John and Dora had three children born to them: Mildred, Glen and Jay. They adopted one son, Vern.

Mildred Ann (b. in Grand River, Ia., June 22, 1899) died Aug. 23, 1966. On March 4, 1920, she was married to Ray C. (Shorty) Walters (April 10, 1897-Apr. 19, 1976). They had no children of their own, but were a second set of parents to the children of Mildred's brother Glen.

Glen Wood Brammer was born July 9, 1902, in Grand River. He married Florence Jennings, daughter of Al and Hattie Jennings. They farmed near Grand River a number of years and were in the restaurant business.

From 1942 to 1960 Glen was G. R. post master and then G. R. Rural mail carrier from 1946 until his death in 1960. Florence and Glen had three sons: Donald, born in 1926; Duane, born in 1930; and Merlyn, born in 1932. All three of the boys graduated from the Grand River High School.

Jay Corbin Brammer, was born Nov. 4, 1915, at Grand River. Jay married Dorothy Walters, and they had two sons: John and Ray. Jay served in the U. S. Army during W. W. II and did duty in the Aleutian Islands. Jay currently lives in Marshalltown, Ia.

John and Dora adopted a fourth child, Vern A. Brammer, born May 7, 1923. He died Feb. 1, 1977, and is buried in the Grand River Cemetery. He also served in the U.S. Army during W. W. II in the South Pacific Theatre. On July 25, 1942, he married Charla Waener, and they had three children: Charla Rae born in 1943; Ronald Paul, born in 1946; and Roberta Ann, born in 1961. Vern owned and operated an electrical business in Marshalltown for thirty-two years and lived most of his married life there.

Merlyn J. (third son of Glen and Florence Brammer) was nicknamed "Charley" by Grandpa John and later became known as "Chuck". Merlyn attended Junior College in Creston, Ia. for two years and the University of Iowa for three years, graduating in 1955. On July 8, 1956, he married Maxine Kloppenburg, a nurse from Hartly, Ia. After working as a pharmacist in Vinton and Cedar Rapids, they moved to Muscatine, Ia. They owned three different pharmacies in Muscatine from 1958 to 1976. From that time, to the present they have owned and operated Brammer Pharmacy in Grinnell, Ia. Maxine is the head nurse at Grinnell Hospital.
