James Palmer was born 11/11/1847 in Vigo County, Indiana and died November 11, 1901 aged 55 years and 2 months.  When he was a small boy his mother died.  At the age of fifteen years he came to Iowa with his father and lived for a short time at Bloomfield.  At the call to arms when the civil war began, he enlisted from Drakesville, Iowa, when he was but 17 years and 7 months old.  He served in the army until August 13, 1865, when he was honorably discharged and came to Ottumwa, Iowa.  On October 17, 1866, Mr. Palmer was united in marriage to Miss Ester Canny, and to this union were born three sons and seven daughters, One of the daughters died in infancy and the other nine children and their widowed mother are left to mourn the departure of a kind and loving husband and father.  The children are as follows; Arthur, James, and Clyde; the Misses Pearl, Iva, Theo and Fern, all of Ottumwa, Mrs. Anna Armentrout of Kansas City, Missouri and Mrs. Carbaugh of Eldon, Iowa.   Mr. Palmer professed a saving faith in Christ last summer and on August 5, in the presence of his family and others he was baptized and received into the Gospel Ridge Congregational church by the pastor, Rev. Dower.  The writer has often visited with him during his last sickness, and he talked many times of the future, during which time he often expressed his hope in Christ as his redeemer.  By His Pastor.
