NELS BERGMAN 1871 - 1956

Nels Bergman, 85, who has been a resident of Odebolt since 1943 died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Niles Meltesen, Thursday, 8 November 1956.

Final rites were conducted by Pastor David C. Brown at 1 o’clock at the Mattes Funeral home and at 2 o’clock at the Arthur Baptist church Saturday, 10 November 1956. Dennis Lindberg sang two selections entitled, "Near to the Heart of God" and "At the Cross" Reuben Lindskoog sang a Swedish number entitled "Jesus Allena". Mrs. Oscar Olson was the organist. Burial was in the Hayes Township cemetery with Joe Samuelson, Arthur Lindberg, Herbert Sonichsen, Seth Johnson, Frank Lindquist and Fred Raasch as pallbearers.

Nels John Bergman was born 4 March 1871 to Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Bergman in Folinge, Jämtland, Sweden. He died Thursday morning, 8 Nov 1956 at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 4 days.

When he was 11 years old, he came to America with his parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers, and made their home on a farm south of Arthur. He has always lived in this vicinity until 1943 when he and Mrs. Bergman moved to Odebolt.

He was united in marriage to Ida Elizabeth Anderson, also a native of Sweden, 18 December 1908. To this union, 4 sons and 4 daughters were born: Floyd and Gene of Kiron; Donald of Arthur; Carl of Vista, California; Mrs. Isabelle Meltesen of Odebolt; Mrs. Elsie Rogneby of Seattle; Mrs. Ione Seaberg of Minneapolis and Mrs. Doris Donaldson of Vista, California.

He accepted the Lord as his Saviour in his early youth and was baptized and joined the Arthur Baptist Church where he has been a faithful member. He served as Deacon of the Church for several years.

Besides the children already mentioned there are left to mourn his departure, 21 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, 2 March 1953 and his parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

Relatives from a distance who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Seaberg and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Albin Carlson and Mrs. Ethel Hurlbert of Worthington, Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs Raymond Swanson of Montivideo, Minnesota.
