Clarice Mae (Lahndorf) Powers Holmes (1932 - 2000)
Clarice Mae, daughter of Ferdinand Jacob and Ida M. Ehlers Lahndorf, was born October 3, 1932, in Manilla, Iowa. Clarice attended school in Manilla and graduated from Manilla High School in 1950.

On June 14, 1952, Clarice was united in marriage with Francis "Buck" Powers. Three sons were born to this union. Clarice and Francis made their home in Manilla where Clarice worked at several cafe's including Macks, Unity Cafe, Chris & Vi's, and the Dairy Mart. She became known as the "Whistle Lady" while serving as playground supervisor at the school for many years.

Shortly before Francis died on September 18, 1983, Clarice began working as a housekeeper at the Manilla Manor.

On May 17, 1991, Clarice was united in marriage with Dale Holmes at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Clarice and Dale made there home in Manilla and she remained working at the Manilla Manor until she was diagnosed with cancer in May of 1999.

Clarice was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. She enjoyed walking, gardening and flowers, stuffed teddy bears, baking and delivering meals to shut-ins and Christmas candy to downtown businesses.

On March 20, 2000, Clarice became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla where she died Monday, April 3, 2000, reaching the age of 67 years and 6 months.

Besides her parents and first husband, Clarice is preceded in death by a son Timothy Powers; a brother Edwin Lahndorf; a sister Lois Lahndorf in infancy; a brother-in-law James Powers; and two sisters-in-law Helen Hargens and Rita Hanneman.

She is survived by her husband Dale Holmes of Manilla; two sons Patrick Powers and his wife Jeannie of Norfolk, Virginia and Mike Powers of Manilla; five grandchildren: Shawn, Meg, Brian, Amy and Chris; two great grandchildren Miranda and Marshall; two step-daughters: Susan and her husband Gale Rosendahl of Sioux City and Tina Miller of Aspinwall; four step grandchildren: Joshua, Jacob, Joseph and James Miller; a brother Bill Lahndorf and his wife Jan of manning; her mother-in-law Ann Holmes of Manilla; a sister-in-law Ruby and her husband Emery Christofferson of Kimballton; three brothers-in-law: Dan Holmes of Boyer; Tom Holmes and his wife Sally of Union Grove, Wisconsin; Bill Powers and his wife Laura of Omaha, Nebraska; and by other relatives and many friends
