Obituary for Tom Powers Manilla Time July 1972

A requiem Mass was held at 11 AM Monday, July 3, 1972 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla for Tom Powers, 84, with Rev. Fr. Gabriel O'Rourke the celebrant.

Ohde Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangments.

Palbearers were Joe Hanrahan, Billie L. Lahndorf, Art Hickey, Arnold Gallagher, Mac Bandow and Jack McSorely. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Manilla.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 PM Sunday evening, led by Father O'Rourke.

Thomas Joseph, son of Stephen and Ellen (Carroll) Powers, was born 6 May, 1888 in Ballyhale, County Kilkenny, Ireland. On 19 June, 1909, at the age of 21, he came to America on the CAMPANIA and landed at the Port of New York and Ellis Island. He had in his possesion $30.00 and was sponsored by James J. Dugan of Vail, Iowa, who was a relation.

He was married in 1916 to Elizabeth McNertney. This union was blessed with five children.

Tom worked on farms in the Manilla area and for the Milwaukee Railroad. He retired in 1930 following an accident in which he lost an eye. He farmed for a couple of years around Alliance, NE, but after two years of hail and drought, was forced to return to Iowa.

He lived in Manilla before residing in the Little Flower Haven at Earling for the past 6 years.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Surviving are his five children; James Powers of Sioux City; Mrs. Helen Hargens of Boone; Mrs. Rita Hanneman of Sioux City; Francis "Buck" Powers of Manilla; William Powers of Omaha, NE; by nine grandchildren and one sister, Sister M. Agatha, The Alverno, Clinton, IA.
