CLINTON — Arthur M.J. Gard, 88, of Clinton, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009.Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 22, 2009, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus Saint Edwards Council #707. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bowman, Bill Bowman, Bill Sieverding, Rick Casel, A.J. Gard; and special friends, James Legel and Lenny Pettit. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.Arthur Matthew Joseph Gard was born on June 3, 1920, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Matthew and Mae (Limbach) Gard. He was very proud of his heritage as a lifelong resident of South Clinton. He attended St. Mary’s High School before serving his country in World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was employed with the Swift Company in Clinton for 23 years.He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, and a former member of the American Legion, Clinton AMVETS and the Clinton Moose Lodge #363. He was a lifelong, diehard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Art had a great sense of humor and took every opportunity to tease and joke with everyone he knew. Surviving to honor his memory are his niece, Sandra (Harold) Bowman of Bellevue, Iowa; and a nephew, Jim (Donna) Gard of Marion, Iowa; several great-nieces and nephews; and very best friend, Rosemary Bousman of Camanche. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; two brothers, Vernon and Porter Gard; and a great-niece, Christine Bowman Victor. Memorials can be made to Clinton AMVETS. His family would like to thank Rosemary Bousman for the joy she brought to Art through her love and friendship. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
