CEDAR RAPIDS — Elwood O. “Al” Breidenbach, age 84, of 2502 Hoosier St. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Clinton, died Friday, January 9, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13th, at the First Baptist Church in Clinton. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton and from 9:30 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at the Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL. Casket bearers will be his grandsons. Al was born in Cooksville, IL, on November 5, 1924, the son of Oscar and Ruth Bigger Breidenbach. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. Al served with the U.S. Navy as a Ships Cook 2nd Class during W.W. II. He married Dorothy Shipley on March 15, 1947, in Champaign, IL. Al was employed with Eagle Food Centers for 30 years. He had managed the 6th Ave. So. and Main Ave. Stores retiring in 1987. Al was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton, the Lions Club, and the American Legion in Normal, IL. He was instrumental in forming the Blind Club in Clinton. Al enjoyed spending time with his family, bicycling and fishing. Al is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Larry Breidenbach and his partner Tim Michelsen of McHenry, IL; five daughters, Vicky (Russ) Warner of Cedar Rapids, Cindy (John) Langford of Winter Garden, FL, Lindy (Patrick) Killean of Cedar Rapids, Gail (Jeff) Leggett of Cedar Rapids and Carla (Greg) Warner of Madison, IN; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, two granddaughters, a sister and a brother. Memorials may be made to the Lions Club or First Baptist Church.
