BETTENDORF — Charles L. Duvall, 88, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2008, at the First Christian Church, 510 E. 15th St., Davenport, Iowa. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Lions Club, First Christian Church or the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was born September 10, 1920, in Keosaqua, Iowa, the son of Iska and Edith M. (Carney) Duvall and was a 1939 graduate of Fairfield (IA) High School. On January 2, 1945, he was united in marriage to Ella Mae Ludwig in Phoenix City, Alabama. She preceded him in death on January 26, 2005. Charles began his career with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Clinton, Iowa, in April of 1946. He worked as a lineman and later as a construction foreman, retiring in 1983 after over 37 years of faithful service. Following his retirement, he was employed as a courier for Metropolitan Medical Laboratory for 18 years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 71st Division, 3rd Army in the European Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946. His memberships included the First Christian Church of Davenport and the Bettendorf Lions Club where he served as president in 1978-79 and was honored as the Lion of the Year in 1987. Charlie was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed caring for his garden (especially tomatoes) each year. Those left to honor his memory include his sons, Dennis (Nancy) Duvall of Davenport and Dale Duvall; five grandchildren, including Nicole Pierce of Davenport, Crystal (Josh) Ross of West Des Moines, Iowa and Brittany (John) Cord of Corinth, Texas; his great-grandchildren, Joshua Pierce Jr., Jazmen Pierce, Jenna Ross and Desting Pierce; his sister, Mary (Vern) Peebler of Ft. Madison, Iowa; and his brother, Gary (Patti) Duvall of Idyllwild, California. In addition to his wife, his sisters, Helen and Bertie; and his brother Louis preceded him in death.
