MADILL, Okla. — Adelaide Petersen was born on August 8, 1917, at Saude, Iowa, the daughter of Matilda Natvig Vaala and Andrew Vaala. After graduating from high school in New Hampton, Iowa, she received her RN degree from the University of Iowa where she met and married Dr. Vernon Petersen. He established his practice in Clinton, Iowa, in 1946 where she lived until she moved to Madill, Oklahoma, in 2000. She and Dr. Petersen had two children, Prudence Petersen Little and Paul Petersen.Adelaide was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clinton, Iowa, and affiliated with the Methodist Church in Madill, Oklahoma. She was an active volunteer in many activities including her church, with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, American Field Service hosting international students, the Red Cross, YWCA, the Clinton County Medical Auxiliary where she established a volunteer Candy Striper program, and Chapter JN of the PEO. In 1987, she was honored as the Woman of Action by the Clinton, Iowa, YWCA. She will be best remembered for the love and extraordinary care she extended to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; a brother, Gregory Vaala; two sisters, Irene Vaala and Gertrude Vaala. She is survived by her sister, Ethel Mae Miller of New Hampton, Iowa; her daughter, Prudence Little and her husband Dan of Madill, Oklahoma; her son Paul Petersen and his wife Sarah Kate Wilson of Menlo, Park, California; and granddaughters, Janna Little Ryan of Janesville, WI, Dana Little Jackson of Chevy Chase, MD, and Mary Little Olcott of Frederick, MD; three great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons along with nieces and nephews, Kendall Miller, Alan Miller, Sylvia Vaala, Geraldine Schmitz, Martin Vaala, Glen Vaala, Randy Vaala and Janette Vaala. Graveside services will be Saturday, December 20, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Red Cross, the Salvation Army or the charity of choice. Death date: Dec. 15, 2008
