Melvin C Webber, 83, of Elkader, died Thursday morning, Jan 2, 2003, in Central Community
Hospital following a sudden illness. Services: 1 p.m. today, Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, by the Rev. Shane Estes. Burial: East Side Cemetery, with military rites by Lemka-Stendel American Legion Post 106. Friends may call
after noon today at the church. Arrangements with Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader.

Melvin was born April 6, 1919, in Garber, Iowa, to George and Bertha (Brandenburg) Webber. He received his education at Elkport High School, was
president of his senior class and graduated in 1937.

He served in the armored division during World War II. Melvin was one of the first inductees drafted
into the U. S. Army.

He was united in marriage to Ivanell Knoke on Feb 24, 1946. They had celebrated 52 years of marriage before her death in 1998.

Melvin was a heavy equipment operator for most of his life, working for Upham Construction, Donaldson Construction and was street commissioner in Elkader.

Melvin was a volunteer fireman in Garber and Elkader for nearly 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion and Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Melvin was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and boating. He enjoyed his family and had a special interest in its many members. His hometown
and surrounding area meant a great deal to him with his many friends and neighbors. In recent years, Melvin enjoyed the upkeep of his house, visiting and traveling with his son, Bob and wife Vicki, picture taking, Iowa football and basketball games and the achievements of his grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Tom (Mary) Webber, Elkader and Bob(Vicki) Webber, Iowa City; and a grandson, Alan Webber and wife Shana Fried, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Ivanell; a son, Steve Alan; and a brother, Walter Webber.
