Margaret Welch was born in Calais, Maine, March 7, 1818, and lived in that state until 1834, when she removed with her people to Boston, Mass., where she resided until 1851. In July, 1842, she married Matthew Andrews, and in 1855 they came to Iowa and settled near Buffalo Grove, Buchanan county, where her husband died in 1856, leaving the mother with five children, three sons and two daughters. The oldest son, Richard served in the three eventful years of the rebellion in the 27th Iowa, and came home in feeble health, dying March 03, 1866. Four of her children survive her, Mrs. Marry Carpenter, of Fayette; Wm. Andrews, of Lamont; and L. K. Andrews and Mrs. Emma Whitmarsh, of Strawberry Point, where she has since resided.
She was brought up among the Episcopal people of eastern Maine, but in 1858 united with the Congregational church, of which she has since been a member. She took great interest in all church, missionary and temperance work, and was ever ready to lend her influence and a helping hand to the cause of morality. She looked upon the various sects as members of the great army of Christian Endeavor striving to bring about the reign of peace and good will, and in her daily life exemplified the teachings of the Golden Rule.
She died Jan. 7, 1895, after a lingering illness of five months, borne with a patient endurance characteristic of her life, her age being 76 years and 10 months. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at her home in Strawberry Point, Rev. Hestwood conducting the services. She was laid to rest in the Buffalo Grove cemetery by the side of her husband and son. Thus ends a beautiful life, and it is said of her that she did good wherever she was.
