Elkader Register, 06 July 1893.
At the residence of Jos. Bonnert [sic], Sr., in this township, Sunday afternoon, occurred an accident which was fearfully fatal in its results. John Stopstack, a brother of Mrs. Bonnert, had been spending the afternoon with the family, and had his team ready to start home when the children desired to ride with him. The man took the two children, one four years old and the other six years, with him in the wagon and started down the hill. From some cause the team started to run, whirled around and threw them out, the four year old child striking on his head in such a manner that he died within the next two hours, and the other boy received a serious wound upon his nose and forehead. The man escaped with a slight injury to his leg. Dr. H. S. Patterson was at once called and did all that was possible for the sufferers.
The remains of the little one were laid away in the East side cemetery at Elkader, on Tuesday. Our people deeply sympathize with the parents in their affliction. The father is 80 years of age, and keenly feels the loss of his boy.
