Court Reporter, J. J. Grinnell, Shoots and Fatally Wounds Engineer George Cornell. The Shooting Was the Result of Family Troubles Arising from Cornell's Intimacy With Mrs. Grinnell.
At North McGregor, Wednesday night, John J. Grinnell, of McGregor, fired the shot that mortally wounded George Cornell, an engineer on the river division of the C. M. & St. P. railway, who had been paying much attention to Mrs. Grinnell, and it is charged without denial had been unduly if not criminally intimate with her.
John J. Grinnell has been court reporter of Clayton county and others of this judicial district for many years. About ten years ago he married Miss Mattie Glenn, they having one son now about eight years old.
The Victim.
George Cornell is the son of Roadmaster Cornell. He is 26 years old and has been an engineer since he was 19, for the last year running a passenger train. About six years ago, when running on the Cascade branch, he eloped with and married Miss Fannie Banghart, of Cascade, whose family is most respectable. They have two children aged about 4 and 2. It is said a divorce was contemplated.
The woman In the Case.
The maiden name of Mrs. J. J. Grinnell was Mattie Glenn. She was born in Dubuque, and when about 9 years of age removed with her parents to Clayton. She is now about 27 years of age. Her father was a river engineer and now lives at Lansing. Mr. and Mrs. Grinnell were married in 1880 and a baby was born to them soon afterward.
