DIED - In McGregor, May 7th, 1886, Charles Gerndt, St., aged 64 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Deceased was born in Neisce, on the river Niesce, on the 25th day of January, 1822. He left home when 17 years of age and traveled over Germany and Denmarck, stopping at Bremen a short time, from which place, in 1849, he went to London, England, where, June 1, 1851, he married Susan Mahr, from Wiesbaden, Herzogthum, Narsaw, Germany.
In August 1852 with his family, wife and one son, he landed in New York, and in McGregor in 1857, where he has since resided.
He leaves a wife and six children, two sons and four daughters.
As a citizen and neighbor he was highly respected; a man of excellent qualities of heart and mind. Those who best knew him awarded him full praise. A quiet, steady, industrious man, interested in what was going on, sensible to the importance of the public welfare, and keenly so regarding the great public water way, a subject to which he gave an earnest study, and on which he became remarkably well posted.
To use a homely phrase, there was more of Charley Gerndt than was generally admitted, and we, who knew him, sod [sic] of him, feel that a good friend has gone down into the silent tomb, summoned to his reward before Him who doeth all things well.
The funeral took place at the German Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Moery officiating, and the remains were interred in Oakland Cemetery
The family desire us to extend thanks to the many friends who so kindly assisted in the hours of deep affliction.
