Elkader Weekly Register, 18 Mar. 1886. Volga column.
As announced in your last issue, another of the old pioneers of Sperry township, has gone to her long home. Mrs. Caroline Goodwin died of good old age at her home on March 10th, 1886. Mrs. G. was born in Grand Isle county, Vermont, March 25th, 1814, and was consequently nearly 72 years of age.
On November 5th, 1829, she was married to Johnathan Goodwin, and together they came to Clayton county, and settled on their farm near Volga City in 1852, where she and most of the family have resided ever since, Mr. Goodwin having died January 29th, 1881.
So far as we have been able to learn their children are all living, being Caroline, William W., Francis F., Enoch A., Seymour, Laura J., and Lewis M.
Since the death of her husband Mrs. Goodwin, with the aid of her children, has cultivated her fine farm and extended her bounteous hospitality to all. The writer of this has been acquainted with Mrs. Goodwin for over 31 years, and when we first came into the county we ofttimes partook of her hospitality.
She was a member of the M. E. church, a good Christian lady and highly esteemed by all who knew her, and her memory will be cherished by all. The funeral occurred on the 12th, the services being conducted by the Rev. Ballou, assisted by Rev. Whitford. It was largely attended, and all her children but three were present. Those absent were Caroline, who lives in Vermont, Enoch A., who is in Kansas, and Seymour, who is located in one of the western territories, just where I do not know. May she rest in peace.
