DIED - John McCoy, an old citizen of McGregor and well known in North Iowa as a soldier under Gen. Taylor at Pr. du Chien (Ft Crawford), was found dead on Sunday morning last in his garden lot about a mile from the city. He was hoeing potatoes and had stepped aside from necessity; he was found dead at the spot! An inquest was held by Judge Baugh.
The deceased left his home at 4 P.M. on Saturday, and was found at 9 next morning. He left property worth 1500 to 2000 dollars - without heirs - unmarried - well respected - about 60 years old.
John drank to excess occasionally, but apoplexy was the cause of his death. The ability to prepare himself for the requirements of nature, and the inability to protect himself from the indelicacy of such a death - position, prove to us that the deceased died instantly. His short, thick neck marked him for Apoplexy before he knew the use of liquor.
This much in vindication of a kind man who cannot now vindicate himself.
