Elkader Register, 13 Jan. 1881.
From Mr. J. H. Bowman we learn the particulars of a sad accident which occurred near Turkey River Station on Monday last.
On that morning Mr. Franz Kappan, a farmer who lived near Turkey River started to kill some hogs by shooting them. For some reason his gun failed to shoot, and he was about to give it up when a young man came along, and said he would shoot them, at the same time pulling a revolver from his pocket. While walking around to get into a favorable position, he slipped and fell, discharging his revolver, the bullet from which striking the frozen ground, glanced upward and struck Kappan in the groin on the right side and taking an upward course caused a wound from the effects of which he died before medical aid could be summoned.
