Clayton County Journal, 22 June 1870.

Edward Barrett, son of John Barrett, one of the early settlers of Read township, in this county, a young unmarried man of about twenty-seven years of age, was found drowned in the Turkey river, about three miles below town and near the mouth of Pony Creek, on Wednesday of last week.

For some weeks young Barrett had been partially insane, if not entirely so, tho' perfectly harmless. Steps had been taken to place him in the Hospital at Mt. Pleasant, where it was hoped under the skillful management of those in charge at that institution, he would soon be restored to reason. A short time before his death he had been in the habit of wandering around the neighborhood, sometimes going as far as town, but always returning, until his family thinking there was no danger, paid but little attention to it, until some few days before his body was found, then as he failed to come home, his friends became alarmed and a search was made which resulted in finding is body as above stated.

Young Barrett was a hard working, Industrious, temperate, honorable and highminded young man, and his parents and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the whole community in their sad bereavement.
