DIED - At McGregor, March 20th, of Membraneous Cramps, Sarah Florence, daughter of J.G. and Phebe A. Bass, aged 3 years, 5 months and ten days.
"Our dear little Florence, how brief was her stay,
But three golden summers and then passed away;
A rainbow of gladness was ou gentle girl -
Her presence an Eden of beauty and joy;
The sweet bud of promise, too pure for earth's saint,
She her only fragrance to bloom as a saint."Our fireside, how lonely - our hearth, O, how drear!
Her prattle, her footsteps, no more shall we hear;
We dreamed of our Florence, a future bright page,
An honor to us, the pride of our age;
But frail little Pilgrim, life's highway is so steep,
Laid down by the way-side and there fell asleep."~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, March 29, 1865; pg 2
Note: Buried in Giard cemetery where she is named Florence Sarah, rather than Sarah Florence as in her obituary. Father = John Gilbert Bass. Mother = Phebe A. Draper
