Funeral services for William A. Stendel were held Wednesday, June 30, 1954, at 2 p.m. at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
William A. Stendel, son of Gottfried and Marie (Lukas) Stendel was born December 22, 1883 at Clayton Center, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Clayton Center by the late Rev. Seifert. He received his education in the Clayton Center school. At the age of fourteen he worked for other farmers in the community.
On Dec. 25, 1911 he was united in marriage to Pearl Shaw and they farmed in Pony Hollow until 1923 when they moved to Elkader. He worked for the town, Clayton County Highway department since 1929 with the State Highway commission, but had retired January 1954.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl, one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Deonita) Kelleher, Marion; two sons, Dewaine, Alpha; and Fred, Elkader, and six grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Charles Meyer, Elkader; two brothers, Charles, St. Olaf, and Herman of Northwood.
Pallbearers were: Wm. Buisman, Albert Holden, Melvin Alderson, Elmer Gusta, Vallie Gottschalk and Harold Miller.
