Funeral services for Fred William Bente were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1954. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

The Witt funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Bente, aged 62 years, 11 months and 08 days, died Wednesday morning, June 16, 1954. He was stricken with a heart attack in March, but seemed to improve gradually. Death came suddenly without any warning.

Fred William Bente, the son of Henry and Ida Muller Bente, was born in Cox Creek township, June 28, 1891. The family lived in Cox Creek township until he was 11 and then moved to a farm in Read township. He received his education in the rural schools.

On April 11, 1917, he was united in marriage to Clara Christofferson at the home of her parents at Postville, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Raymond Kenneth, deceased at the age of eight months, Marie, Mrs. Harry Mueller, Lloyd of Elkader and Glenn of Postville. They farmed in Read township until 1942 when he retired and moved to a farm where he died. He was baptized in Zion Lutheran church, Clayton Center, and confirmed in the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, Elkader, and was a member at the time of his death. He was a school director for several terms and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Glenn and Lloyd, and one daughter, Mrs. Harry Mueller; five grandchildren, one brother, Harry, of Elkader and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Schulte of Elkader and Mrs. Lorenz Wilke of Fayette.

Pallbearers were Herbert Mueller, John Bossard, Frank Lynch, Virgil Uriell, Verni Bahls and James Bissell.
