John H. Schmitt, eldest of a family of __ children, was born son of William and Henrietta H__h Schmitt on a farm in Giard township east of Monona on July 18, 1866, and died at his home in Monona Thursday afternoon, March 19, 1954, at the age of 87 years, 08 months and 01 day.
As a young man he served as apprentice learning the trade of butcher in the Goddard Meat Market in McGregor. On March __, 18__, he was married to Emma Gebhardt of McGregor and moved to the farm east of Monona where they have lived for fifty years. In March, 1948, he moved to the present home in Monona, where he has been connected with the insurance business the past several years.
He was always interested and _____ in the life of his community.
He served as president of the creamery, the telephone company, the commission company and the Council Hill Cemetery association, and as a member of the school board. He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Masonic fraternal organizations, and their sister groups, the Rebecca and Eastern Star. He joined the church in his early years and was active in its work in various capacities until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, William. Surviving are five daughters, Elsie, (Mrs. George Wiethorn), Charlotte (Mrs. Bruce Russell), Marie (Mrs. William Sass), Erma (Mrs. Harvey Marting), and Helen (Mrs. Elmer Marting), all of whom live near Monona. One sister, Mrs. R. H. Haberichter of La Porte City, and one brother, George Schmitt of Blunt, S. Dak., also ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Monona with the Rev E. Wayne Hilmer, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alvin Ebert, pastor of the Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church of Monona. Music was provided by Mrs. George Martin and Mrs. Ben Freeze accompanied by Mrs. Iv_n Schultz. Burial was in the City cemetery.
