Fred H. Buckman, son of John Buckman and his wife Fredericka, nee Otting, was born Oct. 16, 1867, on the present Carl Radloff farm in Farmersburg township, Clayton county, Iowa. In early infancy he was baptized in the Lutheran church at Garnavillo, Iowa.

The greater part of his life was spent on the farm where he was born. When he had attained the proper age he attended the public schools at National. He was engaged in the occupation of farming and every fall he worked for the Allan brothers and ran one of their threshing machines for them. In 1939 he retired and moved to Farmersburg. He lived alone in his house in Farmersburg for ten years. In 1949, because of failing health, he began to live with his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E. Buckman, living with them one year out of the Clarence Buckman farm, and then in 1950 moving with them into Farmersburg.

His health began to fail in 1949. Since that time he had been more or less confined to his home. Since Jan. 10 of this year he has been confined to his bed. During his illness he was cared for by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Wm. E. Buckman, with whom he made his home after the death of his brother Will. He died very suddenly last Monday, Feb. 01, at about 10:10 a.m. He was 86 years, 3 months, and 15 days of age at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mahala, who died at the age of 16, and Mrs. Emma Palas, and one brother, Wm. E. Buckman. He is survived by one brother Henry and by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 04, at 1:45 p.m. in the William E. Buckman home and at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church, Farmersburg. Burial was at Garnavillo.

Pallbearers were: Carl Mueller, George Radloff, Charles Stade, Gus Tielbar, Arthur Wilker, and Albert Engelhardt. Flower girls were: Mrs. Herb Zurcher, Mrs. Harley Palas, and Mrs. James Probert.
