John Jacob Bente died at his home near Waterville, Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1953, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Services were conducted at Waterville funeral home and interment was in Elkader cemetery. The Rev. R. C. Schlueter officiated. Pallbearers were Fred Snickter, Leo Jones, Victor Schelka, Harvey Wagner, Henry Snickter and Alvin Engelhardt.
John Jacob Bente, son of Louis and Lydia Beeh Bente, was born on a farm near Communia, Cox Creek, Clayton county, on Feb. 01, 1877.
He attended a rural school and as a young man was a member of the Communia band.
On Sept. 28, 1889, he was married to Lena Possehl in Cox Creek township. Three children were born to them, Mrs. Harlan (Mabel) Weyant, Merlyn and Melvin.
He farmed near Communia and Edgewood and then moved to a farm near Waterville, Iowa, where he lived until his death.
Surviving are his wife, is daughter, Mrs. Harlan Weyant of Edgewood, and two sons, Merlyn and Melvin, at home; three grandchildren, Mrs. Art (Lucille) Mattson of Marion; Kenneth Weyant of Communia, and Duane Weyant of Edgewood, six great-grandchildren; a brother, Samuel, of Elkader. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death several years ago.
