Fred Ihlenfeldt, one of 12 children of Christian and Friedericka Witt Ihlenfeldt, was born Jan. 13, 1885, in Kleinzastrow, Germany, and died at his home in Elkader Wednesday, Aug. 08, at the age of 71 years, six months and 25 days.

Mr. Ihlenfeldt had been in poor health for a number of years but was not confined to bed until ten days before his death, when he suffered a stroke.

Fred was 15 years of age when he came to the U.S. with his father, two brothers and a sister in 1900. They came directly to Elkader. He had received his education in Germany.

Before his marriage he worked several years in South Dakota. On Feb. 15, 1911, he was married to Anna Meier at Clayton Center by the late Rev. Burkhart. After his marriage he farmed for nine years near Clayton Center, then moved to Elkader in 1920.

For seven years he hauled mail and express and later was employed in the depot. He served as janitor at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church for 10 years and also was a member of the church council for two terms.

His mother preceded him in death in Germany in 1896, and his father in 1905.

He is survived by his wife, one sister, Caroline, Mrs. William Glawe Sr., and one brother, Ernest Ihlenfeldt, both of Elkader, besides nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sunday, Aug. 12, from the Witt Funeral home at 1:30 p.m. and the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery.

Pallbearers were: A. A. Shultz, Orlando Bailey, D. D. Roggensack, Elmer Moser, Russell Huggins, Wm. Muench, Lorenzo Buckman and Ivan Lange. Honorary pallbearers were Lewis Tieden and Harvey Lenth.

Flower ladies were Mrs. A. A. Shultz and Mrs. Ivan Lange.

Those attending from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hansen, Robert Hansen, and Clifford Hansen, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meier, Mitchell, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Meier, Blue Earth, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Biehl, Faribault, Minn.; Mrs. Herbert Boehmer, St. Cloud, Minn. Mrs. Chas. Meier, Mrs. John Meier, Wm. Meier, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Mannon, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Meier and Peggy, Sterling, Ill.

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Polkow, Rockford, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Connely, LeClair; Mr. and Mrs. Willis Ihlenfeldt and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ihlenfeldt, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lenth and Lawrence Radloff, Castalia; Mr. and Mrs. Chas Mangis, Postville; Mrs. Alice Reardon, Harry Long, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Long, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Glawe and family, Manchester.
