Jacob Marion Anthes was born Nov. 16, 1897, at Wellfleet, Neb., the son of Jonathon William and Ella Darnel Anthes. He spent much of his youth in Audubon county, Iowa, and on Dec. 31, 1928, was married to Opal Cole at Sumner, Wash. The couple lived there about two years after their marriage and in 1932 moved to Linn county, Iowa, where they farmed in the vicinity of Coggon and Central City. In the spring of 1952 they moved to the farm east of Strawberry Point which has been their home since that time.

J. M. Anthes, 58, a farmer living a mile east of Strawberry Point, died at the Delaware county Memorial hospital in Manchester shortly after ten o'clock Saturday evening as a result of a skull fracture suffered in an accident at his home. Mr. Anthes had ridden a horse out to the pasture about six o'clock to get the cows for the evening milking. When he did not return his sons went to look for him and found that the horse had thrown him, hitting his head on a rock. He was taken to the office of a Strawberry Point physician and then to the hospital. He never fully regained consciousness although his wife said he did recognize her at the doctor's office.

Survivors include Mrs. Anthes; six sons, Alfred, Paul, Richard and Earl at home, Frank, who is attending college at Seattle, Wash., and Airman Second Class Marion, who is with the Air Force on Okinawa; and two brothers, Oscar of Springville and Jonathon W. Anthes of Tama. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Mr. Anthes was a member of the Congregational church, having been baptized at Coggon in January of 1938. He had a rural school education and was a member of the Grange, a farm organization. He was a lover of horses and dogs.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Edgewood on Tuesday afternoon, July 31, with the Rev. Wayne L. Carlson of Strawberry Point officiating. Burial was in the Strawberry Point cemetery with the Gill Funeral service making the arrangements.
