Another old veteran answered the last roll call on Saturday July 28th. William Saacke died at Savanna at the residence of his son, Wm. Saacke.

Mr. Saacke has been failing for some years having lost his eye sight, being blind and with the declining years he has been quite feeble.

He was born in Hanover, Germany, 1823, came over to this country when a young man, residing at St. Louis and from there came to Guttenberg which was his home until after the war.

He was a old vetran [sic], a member of famous 3rd Iowa, Company C., enlisting in 1861. He participated in a number of battles and skermishes [sic] at Blue mills, Shilo, Hatches Bridge; at Blue mills he was struck by a shell injuring his skull, this wound has always troubled him. After recovering of his wound he was attached to the ordinance department at Natchees. At the close of the war he came to McGregor where he has since resided.

His wife preceded him on May 23rd, 1896, since then he made his home with his children, Mrs. Louise Klein and William Saacke.

He leaves to mourn his loss Louis, William, August and Mrs. Louisa Klein.

He was a charter member of Hervey Dix Post. The Post attended in a body, marching to the depot to receive the remains when they arrived from Savanna, Monday, laying him to rest in Oakland cemetery.

The following members of Co. C. were pall bearers: Messrs. Foster, O'Donnel, Sparks, Kranert, James and Madden.
