Funeral services for William J. Allert, 88, were held Friday afternoon, March 14, at 2:00 p.m. in the Methodist church at Monona with the Rev. E. Wayne Hilmer officiating. The Rev. Lester Sherer of the Giard Methodist church read the scripture and gave the prayer. Burial was in the Giard cemetery.
Mr. Allert's body lay in state at the Methodist church from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Mr. Allert died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Monona, Tuesday afternoon, March 11, at 5:50. He had been in failing health for the past several years. He was born the son of William and Wilhelmina Rowles Allert in Dubuque county March 16, 1869. In 1878 he moved with his parents to Clayton county and lived on the farm near Giard now owned by his sister, Mrs. L. M. Yearous.
He attended the schools of Giard township and Galena college at Galena, Ill.
He was married to Celia Yearous at Giard in 1893. The couple lived on a farm now owned by john Gebhardt. Mrs. Allert died in July 1901, leaving two small daughters, Aneita and Martha.
In 1903 he married Nettie Bernhard at Giard. They purchased the J. S. Bickel farm at Froelich and resided there for ten years. With their son La Verne they moved to Charles City in 1912 where they resided for two years. Then they returned to Froelich and purchased the E. T. Froelich farm where they lived until 1943 when they retired and came to Monona to make their home.
At an early age Mr. Allert joined the Methodist church at Giard, later transferring his membership to the Methodist church at Monona. As a young man he was active in Sunday School, Epworth League, and in manhood was a member of the official board of the Methodist church at Giard.
Mr. Allert was always interested in civic projects and his alert mind maintained a deep interest in world events even in his last years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mrs. Lena Lang.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three children: Mrs. William (Aneita) Mullarkey of Madison, Wis.; Mrs. Alfred (Martha) Eggert of Charles City; La Verne Allert of McGregor; a sister, Mrs. L. M. Yearous of McGregor; a brother, John W. Allert of Monona; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Music at the services was provided by Harry Moon who sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Lord's Prayer." Mrs. Ivon Schultz was the organist.
Pallbearers were H. T. Orr, Emil Aulerich, Carl Etteldorf, William Hubacher, Amos Hagensick, David Olmsted, Norbert Fritz, and William Schlein.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the services were: Mrs. W. A. Mullarkey, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Mullarkey and Michael, and Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Zimmerman all of Madison, Wis.; Mrs. Alfred Eggert, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eggert, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Fenholt, Mrs. Edna Martin, Mrs. Ida Lausch all of Charles City; Mr. and Mrs. La Verne Allert and family of McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Yearous of Elgin; Miss Ruby Becker of Dubuque; Miss Helen Bernhard of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Klaus, Mr. and Mrs. Orren Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sampson, and Mrs. Paul Phillips all of Colesburg.
