Funeral services for one of Clayton county's oldest residents, Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell Carpenter, 98, were held at the First Methodist church in Strawberry Point, Tuesday, Dec. 31, with the Rev. Robert L. Smith officiating. Burial was in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
Elizabeth Mitchell was born in Cox Creek township on Feb. 03, 1859, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Mitchell. On Dec. 20, 1874, she was married to Alexander Carpenter at Strawberry Point. The couple had six children, all of them now deceased. Mrs. Carpenter's hobbies included needlework and reading. She won many prizes with her needlework at local fairs and read a great deal, even in her later years. She died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29, at the Oldfather rest home in Volga, where she had been a resident for the past nine months.
There are twenty-one surviving grandchildren as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and six children, she was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers and one grandchild.
