DIED - At Garnavillo, Friday morning, April 1st, of Diphtheria or Cancer of the stomach, Captain Robert Reed, aged 73 years and 8 months.
The deceased was one of the first settlers of Clayton county. He held prominent public offices and in every way was identified with the County.
The death of this aged and highly respected citizen of our county merits an obituary from a better informed person than the writer. In a few days an extended biographical notice will appear in the county papers.
~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, April 6, 1864; pg 2
Note: Correct surname spelling is READ. Burial is in the old Garnavillo cemetery. If a biographical sketch was printed in a later newspaper, I did not find it. However, he does have a biography in the 1882 History of Clayton County. Click the link below to read it. He served in the Mexican War under General Dodge.
