Karen Schuchmann, 13, Strawberry Point, died Sunday, a victim of polio. She was the first fatality due to polio in the Elkader area this year.

Karen was taken ill with bulbar polio Tuesday and went to University hospitals Wednesday evening. She died Friday.

The only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Schuchmann, Karen celebrated her 13th birthday with a family dinner and a trip Saturday. She was born in Strawberry Point Sept. 07, 1939, and was in eighth grade. Karen was an officer of Junior Mission Band and a member of the clarinet quartet and the school band.
