Funeral services for George Cassidy, 77, were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Witt funeral chapel. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen, pastor of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran church, Clayton Center, officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Mr. Cassidy had been in poor health since April, 1949, when he suffered a stroke, and on Monday, July 07, another stroke followed from which he never recovered. He died at his home in Elkader Friday evening, July 18, 1952.
George Gilbert Cassidy was born in Read township, Clayton county, Iowa, May 07, 1875. The son of Jeremiah and Amelia Munger Cassidy, he was the second oldest of a family of 16. He received his education in the rural schools near his home. When 12 years of age he moved with his parents to Elkader. Aside from a few years at Aberdeen, S. Dak., and Oelwein, Iowa, he had spent the remainder of his life in Elkader.
On April 19, 1905, at the Congregational parsonage in Elkader, he was united in marriage to Augusta Heiden by the pastor, the late Rev. Geo. Baxter.
For many years Mr. Cassidy drove the Osborne stage, a stage which operated from Elkader to Osborne to meet the Milwaukee train at that place, and also drove for the William Grube livery in Elkader. He later worked as a cement mason until 1936 when forced to retire because of a heart ailment. From 1937 until 1948 he served as town marshal.
He was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader and also a member of Modern Woodmen of America.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. George F. (Doris Mae) Scofield, and two sisters, Mrs. Homer (Blanche) Bonnar, Beaver, Pa., and Mrs. Harold (Nora) Glasgow, Mansfield, Ohio.
Pallbearers were: J. W. Downie, Arnold W. Mueller, H. F. Oelberg, William Muench, John Stemmer and Louis Wagner.
