Gilbert Rutledge, 43, of Cedar Rapids, died while enroute to a Cedar Rapids hospital early Sunday morning from injuries sustained in a highway accident about a mile south of Central City on highway 13.
Rutledge, who has lived in Cedar Rapids for the past 15 years, and who was employed at the Patterson garage in Guttenberg, was returning to Cedar Rapids to spend Sunday with his family.
There were no witnesses to the accident but the highway patrolman reported that his car had crossed the center line of the road then followed the shoulder for over 100 feet and rolled over several times into the ditch.
The victim was thrown from the (next several words blurred) under the vehicle as it rolled over. Time of the accident was placed at between one and two o'clock.
The driver of a gasoline transport truck, C. R. Doerres, discovered the accident and with the aid of another passing motorist, Clifford Henderson of Marion, they succeeded in freeing the injured man and summoned an ambulance from Central City, which took him to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. Mr. Rutledge was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Mr. Rutledge is survived by his father, W. L. Rutledge of Guttenberg; his wife Walda; six children, Cheryl 22, Marilyn 20, Joel 12, Mary Ann 9, Judith Ellen 5 and Lynn 2.
The body was taken to the Oelke funeral home in Elkader where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Immanuel Lutheran church in Elkport at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the Mt. Harmony cemetery near Elkport.

ELKPORT COLUMN: Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Rutledge received word Sunday of the sudden death of Mr. Rutledge's brother Gilbert.
Also mentioned as surviving Gilbert are three brothers, Loren and Allyn of Guttenberg; Merlin of Elkport; two sisters, Mrs. Norbert Meyer of Luxemburg; Mrs. Phillip Beauchat of Tucson, Ariz.
Mrs. Rutledge was the former Walda Lenhart of Littleport.
