Funeral services for Mrs. Otto Szemkus were held at the Witt funeral chapel Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Mrs. Szemkus became ill at her home suddenly Wednesday evening. She was taken to a doctor in Elkader and immediately to the sanatarium at Prairie du Chien, Wis., where she died several hours later, having suffered a stroke.
She had reached the age of 62 years, four months and 13 days.
Louisa Rudolph was born in Holstein, Germany, Jan. 02, 1890. She came to America in 1911 and spent the remainder of her life in Clayton county. On Feb. 10, 1912, she was married to Otto Szemkus at Garnavillo. The couple lived on a farm near Clayton Center for 16 years and then for 17 years on the farm five miles east of Elkader which they now own.
In the year 1946 they retired and moved to Elkader, which has since been their home.
Mrs. Szemkus was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader.
She is survived by her husband, one daughter and three sons, namely: Mrs. Roland (Johannah) Rosenwinkel, Crown Point, Ind.; Henry Szemkus, Clayton; Walter of Garber; and Ralph of Elkader; also five brothers and one sister, Henry, Emil, Jacob, John, Fredrick, and Johannah Rudolph, all living in Germany, and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Arno Gossman, Robert Engelhardt, Joe Larson, Edward Glawe, William Muench, and William Doeppke.
