Mary Catherine Almond was born April 27, 1889, at Salem, Iowa, the youngest of three children of Granville Almond and his wife, Kate Russell Almond. She graduated from the Salem high school and attended Whittier Academy at Salem, after which she taught in rural schools of Henry county and in Salem high school for about four years.

On January 07, 1914, she was married to Ralph W. Dutton at Salem, Iowa. The couple came to Strawberry Point in December of 1927, and Mrs. Dutton took an active part in affairs of the community. She served as a substitute teacher in the Strawberry Point school, both in the elementary grades and in the high school for thirteen years. For some ten or twelve years during the 1940's and until the spring of 1950, she served as the local news correspondent for a number of newspapers having general coverage in this area and over the state of Iowa. She was active in the Methodist church and in the Women's Society for Christian Service of that church. She also was a member of the Eastern Star and the Fortnightly Study club. She was a member of the Methodist church for 43 years, having been affiliated with the Congregational church at Salem prior to her marriage.

Last November she underwent a major operation from which she never fully regained her health. She died about ten o'clock Sunday evening, July 07, at her home in Strawberry Point.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Ralph W. Dutton; a daughter, Marion, now Mrs. Harland Muller of Victor; a son, Ralph A. Dutton of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Kirk and Harleen Muller of Victor, and Jeffery Dutton of Cedar Rapids, and a brother, Pearl Almond of Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Harland Almond, who died several years ago.
