The death of Mrs. John J. Conboy occurred Saturday February 28, around nine p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norbert Niemeyer, in Elkader. Mrs. Conboy suffered a broken hip in a fall a month ago, and was being cared for in the Niemeyer home. Shortly before her death, she had a stroke and lapsed into a coma, from which she never recovered.
As Anna M. Samp, she was born February 11, 1885 in Clayton county, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samp, who came from Germany many years ago.
On June 30, 1910, she was united in marriage to John J. Conboy at Volga. They lived at West Union for some time, later establishing their home in Volga where they were both employed by the telephone company.
From 1933 to 1946, Mrs. Conboy was employed at Strawberry Point as chief operator of the Iowa Telephone and Telegraph company.
At the time of her death, she was chief operator of the Volga exchange. She was a member of the Sacred Heart league, the Alter society, the Rosary society and the National Council of Catholic Women. She was a member of the Royal Neighbor lodge and oracle of the local camp.
Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Niemeyer and Miss Kathleen Conboy, who teaches at Anamosa; three grandchildren; a niece, Mrs. Golda Mae Sturdivant, Walla Walla, Wash., whom they reared in their home; two brothers, Con Samp, Oelwein, and Fred Samp, Clinton, Wis.; five sisters: Mrs. Bertha Schoepf, Spencer, S.D.; Mrs. Ida Johnson, Madison, Wis.; Mrs. Fred Pardee, Mrs. Albert Duff and Bess Samp, Volga; also a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two daughters who died in infancy; her parents, one brother, August Samp, and a sister, Mrs. Julia Freeman.
Services were held Tuesday at Sacred Heart church, with the pastor, Rev. D. T. Noonan, celebrant of the Requiem high mass at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Father Fagan of Strawberry Point delivered the sermon. Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery, Volga.
Casket bearers were: Emmett Thyne, George Belden, Forest Humbert, A. J. Cox, P. A. Wolf and F. J. Phillips.
